The Wall and the Floor
When engineers think about perpendicularity, they often focus on the feature being controlled. The hole needs to be perpendicular. The side face needs to be perpendicular. The pin needs to be perpendicular.
But the real challenge isn't controlling the feature.
It's choosing the reference.
We’ve reviewed plenty of drawings where the perpendicularity callout was technically correct but functionally meaningless because the datum structure didn't reflect how the part actually worked.
The feature wasn't the problem.
The datum was.
Let's look at a simple example.
Suppose you're designing a mounting bracket that bolts against another component. The bottom face of the bracket is the surface that establishes orientation during assembly. Everything else on the part ultimately derives its location from that face.
Now you have a hole that needs to accept a dowel pin.
A lot of engineers think about that hole and ask:
"How do I make sure this hole is perfectly square?"
That's not the right question.
The better question is:
"What does this hole need to be square to in order for the assembly to function correctly?"
Don’t be fooled by how similar those questions sound, because they will produce very different drawings.
